simple machines

now i am going to talk about simple machines.....there are....
1.lever
2.inclined plane
3.screw
4.wheel and axle
5.wedge
6.pulley

Lets tak about it one by one:

1.lever

Lever s anything that help to move objects especially heavy one.

There are three classes of levers representing variations in the location of the fulcrum and the input and output forces.

First-class levers
Examples:
Seesaw (also known as a teeter-totter)
Crowbar
Pliers (double lever)
Scissors (double lever)

Second-class levers
Examples:
Wheelbarrow
Nutcracker (double lever)
The handle of a pair of nail clippers

Third-class levers
Examples:
Human arm
Tongs (double lever) (where hinged at one end, the style with a central pivot is first-class)
Catapult

2.inclined plane

An Inclined plane or a ramp is one of the basic machines. It reduces the force necessary to move a load a certain distanc'e up by providing a path for the load to move at a low angle to the ground. This lessens the needed force but increases the distance involved, so that the amount of work stays the same.

3.screw

A screw is a specialized application of the wedge or inclined plane. It contains a wedge, wound around an interior cylinder or shaft, that either fits into a corresponding plane in a nut, or forms a corresponding plane in the wood or metal as it is inserted.

4.wheel and axle

The wheel and axle consists of a handwheel (a disc or lever arm with a handle) which turns an axle around which a chord is wound.

Examples of wheel and axles are:
Bicycles, Ferris wheels, gears, wrenches, door-knobs and steering wheels.

5.wedge

A wedge is a simple machine used to separate two objects, or portions of objects, through the application of force. A wedge is made up of two inclined planes. These planes meet and form a sharp edge. This edge can split things apart. Wedges are used as either separating or holding devices.

6.pulley

This simple machine is made up of a wheel and a rope. The rope fits on the groove of the wheel. One part of the rope is attached to the load. When you pull on one side of the pulley, the wheel turns and the load will move. Pulleys let you move loads up, down, or sideways. Pulleys are good for moving objects to hard to reach places. It also makes the work of moving heavy loads a lot easier.

Examples of where pulleys can be used:
Flag Poles
Clothes Lines
Sailboat
Blinds
Crane

conversion

i have change my blogskin and i am here to post again....ps so long never post liao...but now i m going!hehe...today i am going to talk about conversion... And..a good news...i have finish my dt journal!!!yahoo!!and 2moro is going to start school and i can start my mechanical toy...yeah...!!!

Cam and follower
A cam and follower system is system/mechanism that uses a cam and follower to create a specific motion. The cam is in most cases merely a flat piece of metal that has had an unusual shape or profile machined onto it. This cam is attached to a shaft which enable it to be turned by applying a turning action to the shaft. As the cam rotates it is the profile or shape of the cam that causes the follower to move in a particular way. The movement of the follower is then transmitted to another mechanism or another part of the mechanism. Here are the example:

Crank and slider

As the crank (yellow) turns the pushrod and slider is moved up and down, the end point tracing out a curved, but not necessarily circular motion.

Bevel Gears

Bevel gears can be used to change the direction of drive in a gear system by 90 degrees. A good example is seen as the main mechanism for a hand drill. As the handle of the drill is turned in a vertical direction, the bevel gears change the rotation of the chuck to a horizontal rotation.

Examples:

Rack and pinion
Here are the examples:

This is the example of the cam toy...see how it moves and my dt project will use the similar machine to make ba...you can open up and c the picture more clearly and the turning effect:)

Below is a mechanical toy based on a CAM mechanism. As the handle on the eccentric cam is turned the top part of the egg shell lifts to reveal a face. The basic construction of the toy is also shown below. The ‘flat’ follower moves upwards and downwards as the cam rotates. Although the design is simple it must be made accurately or the mechanism will stick.

A ‘drop cam’ has been used on the toy below. The movement is different compared to the smooth motion of the eccentric cam. As the cam rotates the top half of the shell lifts at a relatively constant speed and then drops down suddenly.

The ‘pear shaped’ cam also has a different motion. The pear shaped cam lifts up the top part of the shell quite quickly and then it drops down just as quickly. However, for half a revolution the shell does not move at all.
